UN chief Antonio Guterres on ‘Suicidal war’ on nature:

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres: “Let’s face the facts – our planet is broken. Humanity has declared war on nature. This is suicide.”

“Our planet is broken,” the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has warned.

Humanity is waging what he describes as a “suicidal” war on the natural world.

“Nature always strikes back, and is doing so with gathering force and fury,” he told a BBC special event on the environment.

Mr Guterres wants to put tackling climate change at the heart of the UN’s global mission.

In a speech entitled State of the Planet, he announced that its “central objective” next year will be to build a global coalition around the need to reduce emissions to net zero.

Net zero refers to cutting greenhouse gas emissions as far as possible and balancing any further releases by removing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere.

Mr Guterres said that every country, city, financial institution and company “should adopt plans for a transition to net zero emissions by 2050”. In his view, they will also need to take decisive action now to put themselves on the path towards achieving this vision.

The objective, said the UN secretary general, will be to cut global emissions by 45% by 2030 compared with 2010 levels.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report

The global risk report published by the World Economic Forum revealed the leading risks facing the world. Five of the ten most serious risks are related to the environment (marked in green) – failure to solve the climate crisis; extreme weather conditions; loss of biodiversity; damage caused by humans to the environment; Crisis and unpredictability in natural resources.

So what can we do about it?

The planetary boundaries that are in danger of reaching at ‘a point of no return’.

Greta Thunberg on the climate crisis; the ecological crisis; The health crisis and their relationship to agriculture, with our diet, and with our attitude to nature.

In the first draft of this post, Greta Thunberg’s appeal was presented in the title and at the top of the text, followed by the speach of the UN Secretary General who is mentioned in Greta’s address.

Before publishing the post, I changed the order of things and put in the title and at the top the text of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres speech, assuming that the description of the situation and the warnings coming from the UN Secretary General will be taken into account by those for whom Greta Thunberg is an “annoying girl who suffers from Asperger”.

The transcript of Greta Thunberg’s appeal

There’s something I would like to talk about – our relationship with nature is broken, but relationships can change .

The climate crisis, ecological crisis, and health crisis – they are all interlinked, we no longer see the links between them – we only see this far – Today.
So what will we do?

My name is Greta Thunberg and I would like to connect the dots, because let’s face it – if we don’t change – we are fucked.

Millions have died from covid 19, Zika, ebola, West nile fever, Sars, Aids. Up to 75 of all new diseases come from other animals because of the way we farm and treat nature, cutting down forests and destroying habitats, we are creating the perfect conditions for diseases to spill over from one animal to another, and to from them us. The next pandemic could be much much worse, but we can change.

83 percent of the world’s agricultural land is used to feed livestock, yet livestock only provide 18 percent of our calories.
The way we make food – raising animals to eat,  clearing land to grow food to feed those animals. If we continue we will run out of land and food. it just doesn’t make sense.

The land requirements of meat and dairy production are equivalent to an area the size of north and south america combined. From Alaska to Tierra del fuego. We have industrialized life on earth.

If we keep making food the way we do, we will also destroy the habitats of most wild plants and animals driving countless species to extinction. This really sucks for us too. They are our life supporting system. If we lose them, we will be lost too.

In the words of the United Nations secretary general Antonio Gutteres – “Humanity is waging war on Nature. This is suicidal. Nature always strikes back, and it is already doing so with growing force and fury.

And what about the Climate? We know that we need to drastically reduce our emissions, starting NOW.

what we think about the villains of the climate crisis of course we picture fossil fuel companies, but agriculture and land use together are about one quarter of our emissions. This is huge! it doesn’t have to be like this.

If we change towards a plant-based diet,  we could save up to 8 billion tons of CO2 every single year!. We could feed ourselves on much less land, and nature could recover – Pandemics, Biodiversity, Climate disruption, Acidification of Oceans, inequality, fertile top soil.

These are all just symptoms. What they all come down to is the way we treat nature the way we value nature.

We need a system change, but we can fix this because we are part of nature.

When we protect nature, we are nature protecting itself.

And finally the animals – what about their thoughts and feelings? some animals plan for the future, forge friendships that last for decades. They play, they help each other, they show signs of what we call empathy, but 70 percent of the animals we farm live inside factories. In the united states that number is 99 percent. Their lives are short and terrible.

how will we be judged?

It is heartbreaking to know all this, but it is also our opportunity. We know what we can do – We can change the way we farm; We can change what we eat; We can change how we treat nature. Some of us have lots of choices while some have none at all. Those with the most power have the most responsibility and most of us can do something.

So – What will you do?

בואו נודה על האמת: אם לא נשתנה - נדפקנו!

what can you do? partial list…

  • study the subject. Seek knowledge and information about global warming, the climate crisis, sustainability, biodiversity and its importance to the ecosystems we depend on. learn about the consequences of the climatic and ecological risk factors on extreme temperatures and extreme climatic events and natural disasters. Learn about air pollution; sea pollution; about epidemics, about our health and that of our family; on the National Security aspects of the climate crisis; and on humanity’s ability to survive due to the insistence on living an unsustainable life style. The site you are visiting is a good starting point to learn and get to know the subject.
  • Talk about these issues. bring them up as topics of conversation in the family and with the children; in social gatherings; in kitchen conversations at workplaces; on social networks, etc.
  • Demonstrate political involvement at the local, regional, or national level. This does not require being politically active, but understanding that we must influence the decision makers and leaders so that they enact appropriate laws and update the regulation so that all nations, together, will fight global warming and prepare as required for the consequences of the climate crisis.
  • Reduce time spent watching commercial channels. Reduce the time you spend watching programs that aim to leave you mindless “zombies”. These channels exist for profit which is achieved through advertisements aimed at getting you to buy things that do not make you happier. Try to ignore the ads. The interests of the advertisers are in many cases contrary to your interests.
  • Put pressure on business companies through the capital market. Sell (or don’t purchase) securities of companies whose activities have a significant negative impact on the environment and do not make significant moves to reduce this impact. Buy securities of companies that operate consistently with an awareness of sustainability. Require the institutional Savings’ bodies and the investment companies to divert investments to “green” companies. If you have a managed portfolio – transfer it to one that will manage the portfolio for you according to a “green” investment policy. As a starting point, give them a list of shares prohibited for investment (a “black list”).
  • Reduce consumption. Everything that is produced for us uses material resources and energy during its production. In order to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and the emission of pollutants we need to reduce the consumption of products and services, especially those that have a substantial effect on the emission of greenhouse gases.
  • Know and apply the rules of sustainability: Reflect – think if necessary; Refuse – refuse (stop consuming); Reduce – reduction (less consumption); Reuse – make repeated use; Recycle.
  • Reduce the consumption of meat products, especially beef, for the sake of which too many environmental resources are used for its cultivation, and as a result of its cultivation, a very large amount of greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere, and in particular methane gas, which is a powerful greenhouse gas, dozens of times more powerful than carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that is usually talked about.
  • Adopt a sustainable diet. A sustainable diet is about preferring food types that have a lower carbon footprint – such as plant-based items and local seasonal products.
  • Avoid wasting food – buy from a grocery list so as not to overbuy. Store food properly at home so it stays fresher for longer. Take home the leftovers from a meal you ate at a restaurant. Eat all the leftovers in the fridge before they go bad. Use vegetables that look less good for cooking and don’t rush and throw them away. Pay attention to the “recommended use by” date.
  • Avoid buying unnecessary clothes that you don’t really need. The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries. Buy quality clothes that will serve you for a long time. Avoid buying “fast fashion”. Buy second hand products.
  • Save on energy use. Use energy efficient devices and light bulbs. Turn off the computer at night. Unplug electronics when not in use to save energy. Wash the clothes in cold water. Air dry clothes instead of using a dryer.
  • Generate energy from the sun – for those who have a free roof, even if it is a shared roof, install solar panels to generate electricity. It is an investment that pays of.
  • Avoid wasting water – water production, and especially desalinated water production, is an energy-intensive process. Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth (or really whenever you’re not using water). take shorter showers. Run the dishwasher or washing machine only when there is a full load. Repair leaking pipes as soon as a leak is noticed.
  • Drink tap water (or filtered tap water). Avoid buying bottled water. Recycling bottles is not really a solution, and in many cases the bottle you threw for recycling will not be recycled and will turn into micro plastic that pollutes the sea, land, and air, and will harm biological diversity.
  • Avoid using single-use plastic as much as possible. Most of the “degradable” tableware also require very specific conditions for decomposition, and they become ordinary (and expensive) garbage. Prefer using reusable tools.
  • Reduce own car use. Demand high-quality and efficient public transportation, and make use of it. Demand “door to door” bicycle infrastructure and use, when possible, bicycles and walking.
  • Reduce the number of flights, especially those intended for recreation and entertainment. Some of the vacations can be spent in your own country. Explore Nature.
